This trek start and finish in the famous town of Lalibela, built by King Lalibela in the 14th Century to be the New Jerusalem. The trek is a loop following the impressive ridges of the Mesket mountains to the summit of Ethiopia 4th highest mountain Abuna Yosef (4300m). Abuna Yoseph, behind Lalibela, is a tantalising prospect to keen walkers and those of us who love to see mountains.
The trek crosses spread communities, amongst impressive and inaccessible mountains and canyons. Locals are welcoming, welcoming and wants to engage in a very friendly way.
This trek is not set in a National Park but nevertheless, it is set in a restricted area, so you are walking among remote communities as they have always lived, and not in an artificially kept touristy environment.
This trek gives you also the time (almost 2 days) to visit the amazing complex of UNESCO World Heritage churches of Lalibela. It is difficult to describe how mesmerizing and breathtaking is to witness the 11 roackHue churches. These churches have simply being carved out of the mountains.
Your accommodation in Lalibela is in a 3-star hotel with swimming, and during the trek, local communities will host you in huts along the way. So you just need your 4 season sleeping bag.
